Colloffancestors
Coltlove
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
It is believed the origins of the
COLLOFF surname may have come from europe.
It is possible someone came to England way back
for a better life, (not much changes) how far back we don't know.
Mainly
through accents, or the inability to read and write English, the
name was writen phoneticlly and evolved to
COLTLOAF, COLTLOFE, COLTLOUGH, COLTLOFF,COLTLOVE and
then to COLLOV in 1798 in
Finchley. The first mention of the COLLOFF spelling
as we know it today in England, was in 1803, also in Finchley.
I have recently found a marriage
of a THOMAS COLLAFF to a
MARY ATCOCK in Newcastle under Lyme,
Staffordshire, on 10 December 1787, Just hoping
he is one of our's.
Have also found a marriage for a
CASPER CALOFF to a MARY BROWN,
which took place in 1771 in the
district of Marylebone, London. Research shows a birth of an ANN
CALOFF in Berwick Upon Tweed, with
the parents JASPER (sic) CALOFF
and wife MARY dated 1773.More research shows a
marriage for an
ANN CALLOFF (sic) to a DANIEL BLACKMORE
in 1792 which took place in the district of Paddington,
London.
Which is a stones throw from Marylebone. No parents names on
marriage entries them days that would help to
make a connection, but the dates all fit.
The only record I can find at
the moment, that links COLLOFF to COLTLOVE,
is the burial entry of a GEORGE
COLLOFF or COLTLOVE, in 1815, Finchley.
Copy below. I would have thought the vicar, The Rev R Worsley,
who officiated over the Births, Marriages and Deaths over a
period of thirty years, would know the names of his
flock. After all the parish was a small one. With George dying at
the age of 20, it takes us back to 1795, which ties in
with a birth of a GEORGE COLTLOVE son of
Benjamin and Elizabeth COLTLOVE on Nov 13 1796.in
Finchley. I have found many COLTLOVES in
Tatenhill and Rolleston in the county of Staffordshire, going
back to
1710.
